Volunteer Spotlight: Melissa McAllister

Volunteer Spotlight: Melissa McAllister

Hello, my name is Melissa McAllister. As of May this year, I was fortunate enough to stay home full time after the company I worked for as an accountant closed their doors. This new found freedom has enabled me to take on a more active role with CCB. I enjoy helping with home visits, fostering, arranging transport and assisting with events when needed.  I have 5 of my own dogs along with a cat named Chandler. I have an American Bulldog named Lexus and four pibbles-Tessa, Winnie, Jax and Maximus! They are all rescues from Statesboro, GA to Sanford, NC. Lexus is the one who started my love for the bully breeds.  However, Winnie is the reason I found CCB and became a volunteer!  I found her browsing Petfinder and it was love at first sight! I began to follow (stalk is the more appropriate word) her pictures on Facebook longing to make her mine! I got the husband on board and adopted her.  I began to foster 3 mos later. Volunteering and advocating for such a wonderful but misunderstood breed has become one of my passions. I have been very blessed to have a husband and three teenagers who share that passion. I would never be able to do all I do without them.  I have a full and active household with my pack and multiple fosters all under the age of three. I love it. There's never a dull moment and I always have plenty of company!  They are all so special and unique. Being a volunteer,  I have learned so much from everyone at CCB! The volunteers are wonderful and although most of them juggle work, home, school, children and their own pets you would never know it! I am proud to be part of this organization!

Featured Adopt-A-Bull: Buck

Buck is an intelligent 11 yr old pit bull whose secret to living a long life is obviously stopping to smell the roses…the mailbox…the neighbor….and anything else that he happens upon! His ever wagging tail tells the story of a dog with lots of enthusiasm for the simple things in life – a comfy place to sleep, enough food and a lap to lay his head in. Not much is known about Buck’s life before being dumped at the shelter for having the audacity to grow old, but he has definitely had some training as he understands basic commands, rides well in a car and walks nicely on a leash. He is crate trained, house trained and recently neutered; and he loves nothing more than to be your shadow or curl up with you on the couch if allowed (and if not, he’s just as happy to stretch out on the floor by your feet). Buck gets along with his female housemate, a short yet hefty English bulldog mix. He has attended daycare and plays well with other dogs. Buck would prefer a home without kitties, unless you are committed to working on improving his feline manners. He hasn’t been kid tested, but would probably do fine with older children as his energy level is moderate. Don’t be fooled by Buck’s graying muzzle. While he is an elderbull, he’s still up for an active lifestyle and would love someone to take him on long walks and make him a beloved part of the family. If you are interested in Buck, visit www.carebullies.org for information on how to adopt.

Featured Happy Ending: River

River came to CCB from one of local shelters we work closely with. Her sad intake picture just reached out to us, and we had to put a smile on her face.  I will always remember how hard she pulled on the leash as we walked out of the shelter as if she knew she was off to better and happier times!

River settled into my busy house with her other fursiblings, but you could tell she never was totally happy.  She always had this look of knowing that she was just here as a stopping point that something was waiting for her ... a home where she would be able to receive that one-on-one devotion and attention she loved so much.  River waited a year to find that special someone; she went to many events with me; and had a lot of photos taken. People loved her polka-dot belly and the way she just wanted to be as close to you as she could ... but the time just wasn't right with those people.

As the months went by, River became more and more part of the family and less of the "foster" dog; even spending the nights in the bed room with me and personal dog, Carrie.  But lots of times River would rather sleep on the floor or out in the living room on the dog bed than share space with Carrie.  I knew that she was waiting for a home that was all hers where she didn't have to share, where she could be center of someones love and devotion.

Then came Mr Allen, a retired rodeo man living alone, looking for a sweet bully to keep him company. It was River's dream home.  She has a human to love on that is all her own, and a little girl as a neighbor that she can hang out with and give kisses to!  River waited a long time to find that right home, and sometimes waiting makes the reward that much sweeter.  People ask all the time how I can have a dog live and share my life for that long and then let them go. Seeing how happy not only River is, but how happy Mr Allen is, will always take the sting out of letting go of River. The ultimate reward is knowing that not only can we give a dog a second chance at life and love; but that we can give people the gift of companionship and loyalty ... that only a bully can give!
